This has probably changed more than any other element of kit. Up until the early 1970's protective gear was very crude, mainly modified cricket protective wear with a leather hard toe kicker for the feet. This kit gave little protection and has led to goalkeepers gaining the reputation for certain deficiencies.

This has resulted in dramatic reduction in injuries to goalkeepers and a similar increase in the cost of the kit. Goalkeeping kit continues to be developed and is improving all the time.
