Field
Hockey Goalkeeping Kit:
This has probably changed more than any other element of kit. Up until the early 1970's protective gear was very crude, mainly modified cricket protective wear with a leather hard toe kicker for the feet. This kit gave little protection and has led to goalkeepers gaining the reputation for certain deficiencies.
Goalkeeping kit developed slowly improving all the time with custom
designed leather kickers, legguards, padded gloves and the introduction
of protective face masks and cages - this kit was very heavy and became
even heavier when it rained!!!!
This
all changed with the introduction of lightweight foam products, the
use of Ice Hockey products including helmets and cages in the late 1980's,
making goalkeepers almost invulnerable.
This
has resulted in dramatic reduction in injuries to goalkeepers and a
similar increase in the cost of the kit. Goalkeeping kit continues to
be developed and is improving all the time.
