The
Field Hockey Game
The Modern game of Hockey was devised, in London, by Cricketers during the later half of the nineteenth century, as a means to keep fit during the winter months. Women started to play around 1890; the game today is played in roughly equal numbers of men and women.
The game was originally played on grass (cricket outfields) until the 1980's when artificial turf pitches came into common use; this has been responsible for dramatic changes to every aspects of the game.
